Phoebe Legere's Arts Education Nonprofit, Foundation for New American Art, Receives Official Mayoral Citation from the City of New York

The Foundation for New American Art (FNAA) is honored to announce that it has received an official Mayoral Citation from Zohran Kwame Mamdani in recognition of its commitment to providing free arts education opportunities for New York City's children and families.

The citation was presented during FNAA's World Cup of Drawing a Soccer Ball, a free interdisciplinary arts program held at the Waterfront Museum on June 28, 2026. The event brought together children, families, artists, and educators to celebrate creativity, mathematics, movement, and the universal language of soccer through hands-on artistic expression.

Praising After-School Workshops & Programs

In the official citation, Mayor Mamdani recognized the Foundation's dedication to expanding educational opportunities for young New Yorkers, particularly those living in low-income communities. The citation notes that FNAA's after-school programs and workshops help young people develop positive personal identities, build strong peer relationships, strengthen artistic skills, and cultivate a sense of responsibility toward their neighborhoods.

The Mayor further praised the Foundation as "a valuable ally" in New York City's mission to ensure that every child has access to outstanding educational opportunities, recognizing the organization's efforts to provide free arts education and help equip the next generation of talented and diverse New Yorkers with the tools they need to thrive.

Founded in 2014, the Foundation for New American Art is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to making high-quality arts education accessible to all. Through free programs in visual art, music, theater, dance, and interdisciplinary learning, the Foundation serves children and families throughout New York City, with a special emphasis on historically underserved communities.

"This citation is a meaningful affirmation of the work our teaching artists, volunteers, community partners, and supporters have made possible," said Phoebe Legere, Founder and Executive Director of the Foundation for New American Art. "We believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover their creative voice, and we are grateful that the City of New York recognizes the importance of arts education in helping young people succeed."

The World Cup of Drawing a Soccer Ball reflects FNAA's belief that learning flourishes when creativity, science, mathematics, athletics, and culture come together. By encouraging children to explore geometry, motion, design, and artistic expression through the globally beloved sport of soccer, the program demonstrates how the arts can inspire confidence, curiosity, and lifelong learning.

The Foundation for New American Art extends its sincere appreciation to Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and the City of New York for this distinguished honor and remains committed to expanding free arts education opportunities for children across the five boroughs.

About the Series

Echoes of the Sounds of New York City is a documentary series drawn from the New York New Rock archive. It documents NYC’s underground live music scene from the 1980s to the early 2000s, preserving the energy and cultural impact of Rock, Pop, Punk, Metal, Industrial, New Wave, and Goth artists, as well as the visionaries behind the scenes who defined the era.

Executive Producer Wolfgang Busch, alongside longtime collaborator Director/Editor Darryl Hell, presents a rare and extensive archive featuring live performances, interviews, original demo cassettes with artwork, band press kits, newsletters, merchandise, and more.

Since the mid-1980s—with over 1,000 bands in his network—Wolfgang Busch has videotaped more than 350 groups performing at iconic venues such as the Cat Club, Limelight, Danceteria, and China Club. Between 1990 and 2000, he produced and directed approximately 400 public access TV shows on Manhattan cable, reaching 250,000 households weekly.

The "rockumentary" series features performances and interviews with influential artists and industry figures, including Phoebe Legere, VON LMO, Gluegun, Skin & Bones, Broomhellda, Carboy, Cycle Sluts From Hell, Needulhed, Virus 23, Sunshine Blind, Sea Monster, Abstinence, Adam Bomb, Hilly Kristal (CBGB), Peter Crowley (Max's Kansas City), Tommy Gunn (Cat Club), Thom Jack (Spiral), and Bob Rowland.

Echoes of the Sounds of New York City serves as a historical record and tribute to the rich, diverse, and often overlooked musical tapestry of New York City—capturing the voices, venues, and creative forces that shaped a generation of live music culture.

Celebrate MONADVember Dedicated To The Greatest & Most Original Band of All Time: Phoebe Legere's MONAD

Please join us as we celebrate MONADVember, an entire month dedicated to honoring the greatest and most original rock band of all time: Phoebe Legere's Monad.

This blog is devoted to Phoebe and her extraordinarily artistic band that revolutionized music and gave birth to what we now know as the "East Village Scene."

Quickly achieving status as a unique and legendary original rock group, Monad marked high-powered milestones including touring with David Bowie, being featured in several major films and recording Legere’s original tunes including ‘Marilyn’ that soared to the top of the college radio charts.

Monad also performed for Phoebe’s “Game Show” that drew standing room only crowds in downtown venues long before the genre became popular.

Phoebe's Monad created opportunities for women in rock. The group developed theatrical events that incorporated engineered sets & dazzling costumes from reclaimed materials in advance of the eco movement.

The sets, the costumes, the social platform, the magic: MONADVember!

The band played every club on the superhot circuit from Limelight to CBGBs and 8BC to Carnegie Hall. Monad played the opening night at famed Pyramid Club.

Thank you, Phoebe, for a remarkable life experience and for the forever to be treasured musical memories!

How will you celebrate MONADVember? We are grateful to Phoebe for the magical artistic moments and the theatrical gems and gold. Thank you for blazing the path for young girls and women to follow. You made their journey far easier. We salute you & we love you!
