Phoebe Legere, A Walker Between Worlds, On the Day of Mourning

From Phoebe Legere:

Good Morning Everybody! I give thanks for all my friends. #gratitude I wanted to take a moment to explain why we call #Thanksgiving the “Day of Mourning.”

t is very easy to understand - once you know the facts. You see, the very first Separatists who came to Turtle Island were deeply spiritual religious pilgrims. They had REAL respect for their Wampanoag neighbors (led by a magnificent genius called The Massasoit also known as Ousamequin (Yellow Feather) But soon word got out about our oceans rich with fish and skies alive with birds of all kinds.

Waves and waves of Caucasian Colonists came to grab free land and abundant resources. You might call it a greedy feeding frenzy for material things. Add to this racism, and intolerance of religious diversity

The next thing you know millions of grandparents, parents and little children were slaughtered. Murdered. Abused. Shamed. Scientists tell us that trauma can be carried for 7 generations and beyond. So please understand that we are still hurting, deeply hurt.

Even though many of you tell me you think Native Americans are cool and you like our religions and cultures, we must be honest with you - We are hurting and continue to be hurt by the Colonization of Turtle Island. I am a walker between worlds - a Mayflower descendant AND a Native American descendant. (Abenaki/Mi’kmaq)
